Urinal

Answering the (close) call of nature

There are plenty of urinals in the men's toilet in the shopping mall of a luxury development in Ho Man Tin - but there's no way they could all be used at the same time.

Helping the decision-making process

A controversial technique called 'nudging' can help people make more socially beneficial choices

A towel which doubles as a measuring tape has been developed as part of Japan's mammoth efforts to reduce its citizens' waistlines.

Child-friendly toilets on the way

The government will provide child-friendly facilities in public toilets, the Legislative Council has been told.

Civic Party calls for more female toilets

Sexual inequality found in public toilets in Hong Kong remains a serious problem unbefitting Hong Kong's reputation as an international city, the Civic Party said yesterday.

Promoters push female urinals

Toilet promoters believe the female urinal could halve queues at women's toilets in the city.

The device will feature in an exhibition of more than 30 toilets through the ages, which opens tomorrow at the Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Wiz of the whizz

When you've been shopping non-stop for eight hours or you've splurged on a grande latte, eventually the inevitable happens. And when it happens, you'd better hope that you were born a male rather than a female.

Website puts Hk urinals on a pedestal

Hong Kong may not have the proudest record when it comes to toilet hygiene, but one proud reader has pointed out that we clean up when it comes to creativity.

She alerted CitySeen to Hong Kong's fine achievement of earning two spots on the list of Top 10 Most Fascinating Urinals, according to www.urinal.net.

Unpleasant smell

I wonder why, in the men's changing room of the Kowloon Park sports centre as well as in the nearby toilet for men in the park, the rows of urinals have no automatic regular flushing mechanism.

Because they do not have this device, they give off a very unpleasant smell.

Airport lacks convenience

I am grateful to the Airport Authority for a polite reply to my comments on the airport ('Service extension impractical' South China Morning Post, April 7). Regrettably, the authority has simply stated that everything is fine and, presumably, I was utterly mistaken. Let us review the issues.

Licence rules illogical

Recently I have been assisting my wife in setting up a small food business in Yung Shue Wan on Lamma. Part of this process involved applying for a light refreshment licence through the Provisional Regional Council.

Scheme to cut germs

Urinals, sinks and tiles coated with anti-bacterial chemicals will be installed in three public toilet blocks early next year.

The Provisional Regional Council said yesterday that use of the Japanese-made products had been shown to cut bacteria growth by 80 per cent and reduce smells.

Toilets in filthy state

I refer to the article headlined, 'Hygiene takes front seat in the toilet revolution' (South China Morning Post, September 25), where it was revealed that foreigners 'cry, smile, scream and jump' when they encounter the public toilets on the mainland.

Hong Kong is one of the world's most important financial centres and yet the conditions of the toilets here are very bad.

Naked rugby fans on losing streak with stadium police

STREAKERS who run onto the pitch at the Rugby Sevens will not escape this time, police warned yesterday.

Last year one naked man was caught and fined $1,000. But another ran the full length of the pitch, kicked a goal and then slipped out of an exit when the stewards were not looking.

Felix bursts into flower at Peninsula

HAVING got a sneak preview of the Philippe Starck/Michael Kadoorie collaboration atop the soon to be open tower at the Peninsula, we must say Felix (as in restaurant rather than Bieger!) is going to be something else.

Basic relief

ON the occasion of Public Toilet 94, may I make some suggestions for improving these necessary and much neglected facilities.

As an engineer I have often had ideas spring to mind when visiting public toilets in Hong Kong, and while most involved explosives or gas masks, some of them have been practical and non-destructive.
