Plan to cement Kai Tak nullah abandoned

The notorious Kai Tak nullah - once one of the city's most putrid waterways - is to get a new life as a landscaped stream along its full length.

The government has abandoned plans to cement over part of the nullah in Wong Tai Sin and the Drainage Services Department is working on a plan to be released for consultation next month.

Kai Tak nullah could remain open

A nullah at Kai Tak runway could remain uncovered and its ecosystem preserved, the Drainage Services Department chief said yesterday.

'The Kai Tak nullah is beautiful. The water is very clean and there are fish ...' said Wong Chee-keung.

Suicidal woman did not realise baby in arms

A young mother who tried to drown herself in a Tin Shui Wai nullah did not realise she was carrying her baby son in her arms until the child started crying, she told the court yesterday.

Sun Li, who lives in Shenzhen, was convicted of child abuse stemming from the failed attempt to kill herself by walking into the nullah with her 10-month-old boy.

A mainland woman, with her 11-month-old son in her arms, was prevented from committing suicide by a bystander when she attempted to walk into a water-filled nullah in Tin Shui Wai yesterday.

Officers deny taunting hawker who drowned

Hawker-control officers denied yesterday that any of them said, 'Let's see how far you can swim' after an elderly hawker fleeing a raid jumped into a nullah and drowned.

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officers also said they had not jumped in to help, despite seeing the man slowly sinking, because they had no life-saving training and feared for their safety.

Seal off Quarry Bay short cut to death, demand councillors

The short cut along a nullah where plumber Lee Ying-kwong disappeared on Tuesday after trying to save two boys should be sealed off, district board members said yesterday.

The Quarry Bay nullah had claimed the lives of other people, they said, as residents yesterday continued to use the short cut.

Filthy harbour to get more toxic waste

I WAS pleased to learn from the South China Morning Post, on May 15 (report headlined, 'Nullah flush brings smell of success'), that the odours from the infamous Kai Tak nullah will soon be a thing of the past.

The cost of HK$800 million would seem to be money well spent.
