Hundreds of thousands turn out for Lunar New Year fireworks

The Year of the Snake hit the city with a bang last night with 4.5 tonnes of explosives fired off in the fireworks display above Victoria Harbour. About 340,000 people watched the fireworks at the peak of the display, police said, most of them on the Kowloon side.

1950s Star Ferry baby Christina North relives Victoria Harbour crossing

Christina North is proud to tell people not just that she was born in Hong Kong. She adds that she entered the world on a Star Ferry boat crossing Victoria Harbour.

Her father was a British naval officer posted in Hong Kong at the time. On the day of North's birth in 1956, her mother was on the way to the British Military Hospital in Kowloon when she went into labour on the ferry.

Authority must keep waterfront green

I think it is necessary for a statutory harbour authority, which will be able to plan, design and manage the waterfront, to be established in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is an architects' playground. Against a backdrop of steep hills and framing the city's crown jewel that is Victoria Harbour stand impossibly tall structures, packed as tightly as trees in a jungle - a testament to wealth and power.

New harbour authority must reflect public interest

There is no question that the people of Hong Kong own Victoria Harbour. The Protection of the Harbour Ordinance makes that clear. But it has never been clear who is ultimately responsible for managing and safeguarding their most precious natural asset. This has been left to various government departments with administrative power over one thing or another.
