Winnie Ho's duels with the 'devil'

Winnie Ho Yuen-ki (left), the estranged sister of gaming magnate Stanley Ho Hung-sun, has not only written an autobiography. She has now produced a VCD to go with the book.

Titled Struggling with the Devil: An Oral History, both disc and book will be available in Macau next week, timed with the opening of her court case over a certain business transaction.

Six held after boat with VCDs intercepted

Customs officers arrested six mainlanders and seized HK$12.7 million worth of smuggled VCDs after intercepting a mainland-bound fishing boat near the sea boundary off Magazine Island late on Wednesday night. The 529 cartons of video compact discs, including music videos and television dramas, were hidden in secret compartments, customs spokesman Carl Lam Chi-keung said.

Downloaders eating into film profits, survey finds

Hong Kong is losing at least half of its potential movie earnings due to illegal internet downloads, a worldwide survey of losses to the film industry has shown.

The survey also indicated that the mainland lost 93 per cent of its yearly potential movie market to piracy, or US$2.69 billion.

Goods worth $10.4m seized after marine police intercept boats from mainland

Marine police have arrested 11 people and seized smuggled goods worth $10.4 million after foiling an attempt to load the contraband on to 10 speedboats at sea.

The seizure was made after the fleet of unlit speedboats approaching from the mainland off Waglan Island was detected by radar.

Customs raid pirated VCD stores

Updated at 4.45pm: Customs officers yesterday seized about 20,000 pirated video compact disks (VCD) worth up to $600,000 from 22 stores in Mong Kok.

A spokesman said on Thursday the seizure included a batch of well-packaged pirated copies of Howl?s Moving Castle ? a newly released Japanese cartoon film.

Customs officers smash VCD smuggling operation

Updated at 4.12pm: Customs have smashed a smuggling operation that had used a fishing vessel to transport illegal VCDs, a spokesman said on Thursday.

It is the largest operation of its kind to be uncovered so far this year, he said.

The VCDs were worth about $3.68 million.
