Swamped New Territories villages welcome all inspectors

Like most residents of the New Territories, I welcome the government's initiative to set up a new department to investigate what has become known in the media as unauthorised structures. New Territories residents know this to be a euphemism for "essential home improvements".

Elliot Watkiss, eight, and his brother Frankie, seven, died in their home in Wing Hing Wai, Yuen Long, in October after a fire broke out while they were asleep. The boys' father Simon Watkiss last week told the Sunday Morning Post that his sons' lives would have been saved if emergency vehicles had had proper access to the family's village home.

End small-house policy, Civic Party says

Ending the small-house policy for indigenous villagers in the New Territories would boost land supply and ease the city's housing shortage, the Civic Party says.

And the land shortage should not be used as "an excuse" by the government for not relieving the housing situation, party executive committee member Bonnie Leung Wing-man said yesterday at the weekly City Forum.

Only half of the New Territories village houses believed to have illegal structures have been reported to the Buildings Department, despite a scheme offering leniency to people who declare less-dangerous structures that ended on Monday.
