Vogue and the thin edge of the pledge

The recent pledge by Vogue worldwide to ban models under the age of 16 and those thought to have an eating disorder is set to have a huge impact on the fashion industry. The ambitious pledge - dubbed the Health Initiative - runs in the June issues of the magazine in reaction to concerns over the rise of unhealthy body images and eating disorders in young women.

Queen Carine

'With Karl [Lagerfeld], you never know exactly what you will do,' says Carine Roitfeld, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, the French edition of the fashion bible. 'You have an idea but you never know how it's going to finish, how long it's going to take or who is going to come; it's always a surprise.'

Italian food master makes sure delectable Swank menu is in vogue

Chef Michele Senigaglia of Italian restaurant Spasso usually sources inspiration from cook books when designing a new menu. But for the menu he created for local fashion retailer The Swank, he looked in the women's magazines corner.

'I read a few issues of Vogue when I was working on the menu,' Senigaglia said, laughing.

Photo spread of 10-year-old girl went too far

Fashion's uncomfortable relationship with age has become even more tense this month over a 10-year-old model's French Vogue January fashion shoot. I was shocked when I saw the pictures. The heavily made-up Thylane Blondeau wears stilettos, stylised hairdos and grown-up outfits, posing provocatively. This shoot gets a 15-page feature in the issue, guest edited by Tom Ford.

China Doll

DU JUAN is in the lobby of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York. She's wearing an understated navy sweater and grey trousers, a silver Louis Vuitton scarf the only model-esque thing about her. With her doll-like features, innocent eyes and creamy skin, she is more school girl than high-fashion model.

'I hate wearing make-up when I'm not working,' she says.

Sophia Bennett's classy debut novel is aimed directly at one specific group of readers, and it hits the target smack in the middle . If you aren't a teenage fashionista with an eye on what is happening in Vogue and on the catwalk, though, then Threads is definitely not for you.

Sew far, so good

Dressed in a rumpled plaid shirt, skinny black jeans and chunky biker boots, Alexander Wang looks more like a downtown Manhattan child than a successful designer doing interviews at Harvey Nichols in Hong Kong.

'I'm 23,' says the fresh-faced Wang. It's remarkable when you consider he's already a favourite of many fashion editors and celebrities.

Sold on the fantasy

The mainland's magazine market is booming. Latest figures from the General Administration of Press and Publication show that almost 10,000 periodicals are published each year. Some 2.85 billion copies of magazines hit news-stands, or subscriber's mail boxes, last year. With advertising revenue also rising, the industry is now worth 17 billion yuan annually.

The Godfather of Sole

MANOLO BLAHNIK is a gentleman. There's no other word for it. There's something charmingly, reassuringly old school about the way he deferentially refers to everyone as 'Mr' or 'Mrs', never using their first name. There's a gentility and elegance to his tone and manner that so many in the fast-moving world of fashion lack.
