Top Taiwan negotiator chosen

Beijing has invited Yan Mingfu, the former head of the United Front Work Department and an aide of ousted party boss Zhao Ziyang, to become the mainland's chief negotiator with Taiwan, according to a source.

Praise for architect of cross-strait dialogue

The last time the mainland's top negotiator on cross-strait issues, Wang Daohan, sat down to talk with a Taiwanese political figure in Shanghai was in 1998.

Mr Wang met the then-chairman of Taiwan's Strait Exchange Foundation, Koo Chen-fu, a member of the Kuomintang which ruled the island at the time.

Leadership changes expected in SEF

Taipei will shuffle the leadership of the quasi-official agency in charge of cross-strait negotiations amid speculation that a senior legislator with the ruling party will become the island's top envoy to the mainland.

Shi Hwei-yow, secretary-general of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), confirmed changes were being made to the agency.

Top envoy seeks cross-strait talks

Beijing's chief cross-strait negotiator yesterday called for a resumption of reunification talks with Taiwan as soon as possible, the China News Service reported.

Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits chairman Wang Daohan said it was time for Beijing and Taiwan to resume the long-stalled dialogue based upon the 'one China' consensus reached in 1992.

Taipei envoy's visit ruled out in wake of 'two states' theory

There is no need for Taiwan's top envoy to visit the mainland unless Taipei retracts the 'two states' theory raised by island President Lee Teng-hui, Beijing said yesterday.

Zhang Jincheng, a vice-chairman of Beijing's negotiating body, the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS), said Mr Lee's theory had ruined the basis of dialogue between the two sides.
