Defending champion Zhang Jike retained his men's singles title at the world championships after defeating fellow mainlander Wang Hao in the final. Fourth seed Zhang prevailed 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 14-12, 5-11, 11-7 in a rematch of last year's Olympic final to secure a fourth major title in a row.

Junior doctor stabbed to death by angry patient

A junior doctor admitted to a PhD programme in Hong Kong was stabbed to death by an angry patient while at work in a Harbin hospital on Friday.

Wang Hao, 28, was one of four doctors stabbed by a patient who had gone to the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University with a spinal inflammation, according to a hospital statement.

Wang Liqin leads clean sweep for dominant China

World number one Wang Liqin made some amends for the disappointment of a bronze medal in Athens by defeating Wang Hao to take the men's Volkswagen Open in Changchun.

Wang Liqin, who lost to Wang Hao, currently ranked three, in the semi-finals at the Olympics, gained revenge by beating him 4-3 in his home city, 6-11, 11-6, 13-11, 10-12, 11-6, 12-14, 11-2.
