'200 hurt' in clashes over urban merger

Thousands of residents in an affluent district on the outskirts of Chongqing clashed with police for three days this week over an unpopular merger with another district, four residents said yesterday.

They said many were beaten by baton-wielding police and threw rocks in retaliation. A staff member at a nearby hospital said about 200 people were injured.

Afghanistan joins bloc as observer

The Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) - a bloc comprising China, Russia and four Central Asia countries - accepted Afghanistan as an observer yesterday as it ended two days of talks in Beijing.

Member states also jointly criticised Nato for establishing a missile defence system, and opposed any use of force against Iran.
