A judge yesterday denied graft-busters access to legal material seized under a search warrant while the owners of the material seek to have the warrant quashed.

But Mr Justice Michael Hartmann told a barrister acting for the applicants that he had yet to be convinced he had the power to rescind the warrant.

Police told to return seized karaoke equipment

Police were yesterday ordered to return the audio, video and lighting equipment that was seized from a Nathan Road karaoke bar this week.

Mr Justice Michael Hartmann granted an interim injunction ordering the police to return within 24 hours the seized items, worth about $1 million, to Sunny Great, which owns 348 Disco & Karaoke.

Journalistic material 'not ICAC target'

Journalistic material seized from Apple Daily did not interest graftbusters, who were looking only for information helpful to their criminal investigation, a court heard yesterday.

Kevin Zervos, for the Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption, also told the Court of Appeal all anti-graft officers had a constant power of seizure.

Apple may retrieve papers if warrants ruled invalid

Anti-graft officers will have to return - untouched - material seized from the Apple Daily if a judge quashes two search warrants on Monday, a court heard yesterday.

Mr Justice Gareth Lugar-Mawson is to rule on the newspaper's application to set aside the warrants two weeks after they were executed.

Law allows the seizure of journalists' books and files

Anti-graft officers who raided Apple Daily's Tseung Kwan O offices on Monday were armed with rarely used warrants allowing the seizure of journalists' notebooks, contact numbers and computer files, the ICAC said.

Five of the total of 10 warrants signed by High Court Judge Thomas Gall were obtained under Section 85 of the Interpretation and General Clauses Ordinance.

A Macau judge who signed an order dropping arrest warrants for five suspected senior triad members has left the enclave's Judiciary.

Judge Joao Abrunhosa de Carvalho, struck the suspected head of Macau's 14K gang and four of his lieutenants off the wanted list on Monday, his last day of service.

THE ICAC seized documents from a firm under investigation without the legal authority to do so, the High Court heard yesterday.

Philip Dykes, for the retail firm, said a search warrant issued by Deputy Commissioner Jim Buckle did not contain the necessary information.

A WESTERN Court magistrate yesterday issued an arrest warrant for a man who allegedly defaced the Legislative Council building. Yeung Cheung-kwan failed to appear in court to answer to a charge of writing graffiti near one of the building's entrances.
