But wait ... didn't that already happen? We often hear in debates and in the news that China is the world's second-largest economy, behind only the US and catching up fast. The expectation was treated as history; the forecast a certain fact.

Pacific Ports has warned shareholders profit for the year to December 31 would be significantly lower than $50 million, contradicting a forecast made in its listing prospectus last April that profit would not be less than $50 million. The firm's former chairman, John Chan Boon-ning, was charged in March in connection with allegations he stole $81 million from the company.

The regional spectral model system is a programme that simulates probable weather outcomes after being fed with initial data.

THIS week sees a return to the normal data release schedule for the United States.

On Tuesday, housing starts for November will be released. A modest increase to 1.38 million is forecast.

The trade deficit out on Wednesday for the month of November is forecast at US$10 billion.

MAJOR data releases in the United States for the month of November start on Tuesday with the producer price index likely to post a stronger result of 0.5 per cent.

Fed and indicators to set tone for trade

THIS week, several key US economic indicators are released, including the index of Consumer Sentiment for August on Tuesday, which is expected to come in at a slightly lower level of 97, and Durable Goods orders for August on Wednesday, which are forecast to increase one per cent.

The key indicator for Friday will be second quarter GDP, which is forecast to rise 1.1 per cent.

A STRING of strong economic indicators is due this week.

In the United States, July Business Inventories is due on Monday, with a 0.4 per cent rise expected. On Tuesday, August Housing Starts are forecast to rise slightly to 1.40 million.

The July trade balance out on Wednesday is expected to post an $11 billion deficit.
