When you watch the Olympic weightlifting events on TV, you may think the sport looks painful and tiring. But local weightlifters Ben Li Kwok-tin and Tsang Wai-shing still fell in love with it, and they aim to shine on the international stage one day.

Zhang ensures Macau's golden first

Macau's Zhang Shaoling shocked the established order in the women's 69kg weightlifting event when she beat Beijing Olympic gold medallist and world record-holder Liu Chunhong to claim gold at the Lai Chi Kok Park Sports Centre. Zhang's combined lift of 243kg was Macau's fourth gold medal at the Games in any sport.

Cuban weightlifter Hidalberto Quintero Aranda hoisted 205.5 kilograms to set a world record for the clean and jerk in the 77-kilogram weight class.

Quintero Aranda, 24, beat the world standard of 205 kgs set for the 77 kg weight class back in 1998 when weight categories for lifters were reclassified.

Yangzhou: Chinese weightlifters broke five world records en route to nine golds on day two of the Asian Championships yesterday.

Wan Jianhui shattered the snatch world record with a lift of 163 kilograms on his way to gold in all three disciplines in the men's 70-kg class, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

$400,000 lobby snatch

A ROBBER snatched $400,000 in cash from an office worker at a block in Wing Lok Street, Central, at lunchtime yesterday.

The 26-year-old clerk was waiting in the lift lobby when the man snatched a case holding the cash, which had just been drawn from the bank.
