China incensed by Russia's move to charge fishermen

A rare diplomatic dispute between China and Russia, in which dozens of Chinese fishermen were arrested in Russian waters, has deteriorated after Moscow decided to press criminal charges against the captains of two Chinese trawlers seized a week ago.

US firm's bill for oil spill off Shandong may soar

ConocoPhillips, the US oil and gas company involved in two recent oil spills off the coast of Shandong province, may end up facing a far higher compensation bill from the central government than the 200,000 yuan (HK$240,400) penalty announced on Tuesday, a marine environment expert says.

Two foreign freighters collide off Shandong

All 49 crew on two foreign cargo ships that collided off the Shandong coast yesterday morning were rescued, Xinhua reported.

The Maritime Bureau in Weihai, a port city in the eastern province, said it received reports at about 2.30am that a Panamanian ship had collided with a Maltese vessel and that both were seriously damaged.

Weihai Power project progresses

New York-listed Shandong Huaneng Power Development said the first generator for phase two of the Weihai Power Plant Phase, in which it has a 60 per cent stake, was completed on December 27. The project will have two 300-megawatt coal-fired generators. The first generator, Unit 3, is expected to begin commercial operation in March.

Weihai wharves open

Weihai, in Shandong province, has opened two new wharves to Chinese and foreign ships.

The first, a general purpose wharf, has a handling capacity of 400,000 tonnes a year and can accommodate vessels of 20,000 dwt. The second is the biggest petroleum and liquified gas handler in China, with a 50,000 dwt berth.

Port embarks on expansion to meet demand

YANTAI Port, the city's main marine facility, is expanding its capacity to cope with increasing demand.

Some foreign investors have found the facilities inadequate and have chosen to use the ports of Qingdao and Weihai.

Weihai in Korea deal

WEIHAI port in Shandong province is planning regular trade fairs and discussions with business leaders from nearby Korea.

The agreement, approved by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation, is the only officially ratified annual discussion of its kind in China.

RJP keen to play part in Weihai port plan

RJP Electronics is discussing plans to invest in the development of port facilities in Weihai, Shandong.

Chairman Robert Li Shu-keung said the group was interested in developing Weihai's port, which needed better transportation facilities to cope with economic growth there.
