Bloomberg yesterday quoted a source as saying that following an attack on his company by Chinese hackers in 2010, Sergey Brin, Google's co-founder, was provided with highly sensitive US government intelligence linking the attack to a specific unit of the People's Liberation Army, China's military. Brin was given a temporary classified clearance to sit on the briefing by US intelligence officials.

Two letters suspected of containing the deadly poison ricin and addressed to US President Barack Obama and a senator were related and bore a postmark from Memphis, Tennessee. The FBI said the Obama letter contained a "granular substance that preliminarily tested positive for ricin" and had been intercepted at a facility outside the White House that screened the president's mail.

A petition, created on the White House website's "We the People" section, had more than 5,000 signatures on Thursday morning. "Local parents in Hong Kong can hardly buy baby formula milk powder in drugstores and supermarkets, as smugglers from mainland China storm to this tiny city to buy milk powder and resell it for huge profits in China," it reads.

The White House and its allies are weighing military options to secure Syria's chemical and biological weapons, after intelligence reports showed the Syrian regime may be readying the arms and may be desperate enough to use them against rebels, US officials said.

One US official said Monday that Syria had begun mixing chemicals that might be used to make deadly sarin gas.

US President Barack Obama has made Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner the lead White House negotiator in crisis budget talks with congressional leaders aimed at averting the fiscal cliff.

"He's the lead negotiator for these talks as designated by the White House, but it's obviously a team effort with several officials," a source close to the matter said Monday.
