The Who

Mods should have called it a day right there in 1973 when The Who released this magnum opus based on an era which spawned one of Britain's most stylish youth tribes. Nothing that came in its wake could ever match up to the original Quadrophenia (forget the 1979 film soundtrack).

Imagine it. You're a manager. Your staff is ravaged by lay-offs and demoralised by tumbling stock prices.

Their options seemingly not worth having, their futures uncertain, their closest colleagues sacked.

You desperately need to motivate them.

What do you do?

You write a little song.

Electronic set to fulfil promise

Electronic Seeker is a confident selection for this afternoon's fourth event on a mixed dirt and grass card at Sha Tin.

Much of the day's focus will be on how the Brian Kan Ping-chee-trained Derby aspirant Industrial Pioneer shapes in the Centenary Vase, which has attracted a disappointingly small field - as is so often the case with these higher-grade staying events.

Bonus that's maid for the busy housewife

Dah Sing Bank's new credit cards are intriguing. Some of the deals on offer deserve top marks for originality.

Lai See notes that successful applicants for the 'Attitude 2000' visa are to receive a special 'Countdown' wrist watch.

Nothing wildly new in that.

But Dah Sing's cash rebate offer is certainly one of a kind.

Solid gold

Bird's nest soup is a pleasant enough dish but I am not sure it is really worth all the effort.

As tonight's documentary White Gold (World, 8pm) shows, collecting the raw materials is such a delicate craft that it has become a restricted occupation, tightly controlled and handed down from generation to generation.

Cheap and cheerless

Watching a magician 'dig' his way out of a grave on Hidden Secrets Of Magic on World on Wednesday evening it occurred to me how many magic shows there are on Hong Kong television.

Rainbow seeks pot of gold

The young guns should hold centre stage at Sha Tin this afternoon with the highly progressive Rainbow Seeker and Calculation, Derby hope We Know When and the exciting griffin debutant Bumper Storm all expected to take plenty of beating.

A YOUTH was killed when he was attacked by a gang of about 10 teenagers armed with wooden planks in Macau last night.

The victim, aged about 15, and whose identity was not immediately known, was certified dead on arrival at the Government Hospital.
