Villagers fear site is columbarium

A recent renovation of a cluster of buildings in Sha Tin appears aimed at transforming the site into a columbarium, nearby villagers suspect. They say it would be illegal.

Four hurt in blaze at Sha Tin village

Four people including a fireman were injured in a No3 alarm fire at a Sha Tin village. One hundred firefighters were sent to the scene after a report that a corrugated-iron hut in Ha Wo Che had caught fire at 4pm. Thirty villagers were evacuated, but two men were hurt in the scramble to escape, and a woman suffered smoke inhalation.

Boy, 7, dies after fall in flat

A seven-year-old Sha Tin boy died in Prince of Wales Hospital yesterday after slipping and injuring his head while playing at a classmate's home on Saturday afternoon. Police said Chan Ka-chun suffered injuries to his forehead and had a bleeding nose after the accident in a flat in Wo Che Estate, Sha Tin, about 2pm.

St Joan of Arc Secondary School

Our school organised a musical - A Christmas Carol, an adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic - on December 6.

The musical, performed by Chunky Onion Productions, was a big hit.

The story is about a bitter, selfish, rich and old businessman called Ebenezer Scrooge and how he learns to enjoy the spirit of Christmas.

Man, 39, jumps to death

A 39-year-old man died after throwing himself from a public housing block in Sha Tin yesterday. He was found lying outside Tak Wo House, Wo Che Estate, about 12.30am and declared dead at Prince of Wales Hospital. His mother, 60, told police he was heavily in debt.

A suicidal man was talked down from the roof of a public housing block in Sha Tin after an hour-long stand-off with police. He was seen near the edge of the roof of Hau Wo House in Wo Che Estate.

Gas suicide

A man, 40, gassed himself to death at his home in Yan Wo House, Wo Che Estate, Sha Tin. His brother, 48, found the victim's body on a bed after breaking open the door of the apartment with a hammer. A coal-burning heater and three suicide letters were found.

Records tumble as pupils take to the water!

Six records fell at Sha Tin Government Secondary School's 21st swimming gala at Sha Tin Jockey Club Swimming Pool.

Wong Yat-pui set two new marks in the boys' Grade B 50 metres front and backstroke competitions.

Kwok Sin-hang emulated Yat-pui's achievement by setting new records in the girls' Grade C 50 m backstroke and 100 m open events.

Olympic hero king's mentor

Intensive training under the guidance of an Olympic medallist helped steer a third-former to glory at the Sha Tin Government Secondary School swimming carnival.

Dubbed 'King of the Pool' at last year's titles, Wong Yat-pui did equally well this year in setting new records in the Grade B boys' 50- metre breaststroke event and the 100 m freestyle.
