Restaurant-raid triad suspects freed on bail

The police last night released the 16 suspected triad leaders arrested at an upmarket restaurant on Monday night.

The suspected senior gang members were arrested in a high-profile raid in Causeway Bay. Sources identified them as belonging to the Wo Shing Wo and Wo Hop To triad societies.

A triad member murdered in an execution-style killing in Sai Kung was shot with a Korean-made handgun that police say is rare in Hong Kong.

A man, 22, believed to be a member of the Wo Hop To triad society, was beaten unconscious by a gang of 10 men in Ap Lei Chau early yesterday. He later regained consciousness in Queen Mary Hospital.

Police ambush drugs suspects

POLICE believe they have smashed a triad-linked syndicate supplying young people with soft drugs after the seizure of 5,000 tranquillisers with a street value of $140,000 in Sha Tin.

Two alleged Wo Hop To members - one believed to be the syndicate's mastermind - were arrested in an ambush by 20 officers at a restaurant in Sha Tin New Town Plaza.

22 held in raids on Wo Hop To

POLICE yesterday arrested 22 suspected key figures in a crackdown on the Wo Hop To triad gang.

The operation against the gang - one of the most active on Hong Kong Island - began in January in anticipation of its biannual elections last month.

At least four top-ranking leaders were arrested in territory-wide raids from 10 pm on Wednesday.

Daya Bay unit closed

ONE of the two generating units at the Daya Bay nuclear power plant was shut down this week because of high vibrations in a water pipe, it was revealed last night.

The unit, which was re-started yesterday morning, was expected to reach full power today, according to a spokesman for the Hong Kong partner, China Light and Power.

POLICE have arrested 33 people - including a 14-year-old boy - in a series of raids on triad groups involved in extortion rackets on construction sites.

The Organised Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB) yesterday revealed 105 charges were likely to be laid against members from five triads: Wo Hop To, Wo Shing Wo, Wo On Lok, 14K and Sun Yee On.
