India is the world's biggest democracy and has one of its most dynamic economies. Yet, as the brutal rape of a woman in its capital has revealed, it is also a country of contradictions. While Western mores, fashions and trends are increasingly being embraced, society remains deeply and firmly patriarchal, with men domineering from the boardroom to bedroom.

Former World Bank chief economist Justin Lin Yifu's book, The Quest for Prosperity, reviewed by Clive Crook ("A middle way around the economic errors of the past", December 24) suggests that the "structuralism" of the Soviet Union failed because of "isolation from global markets".

Rape case exposes India's dismal record of delivering justice for women

A 23-year-old paramedical student went to a cinema with a male friend this month in the Indian capital, Delhi. On the way back, the young woman and her friend were lured onto a private bus masquerading as a public bus. She was then gang-raped by six men, who bashed the couple with an iron rod and left them on a roadside.
