Hong Kong's players made history twice over yesterday as Annie Au Wing-chi became the first local player ever to reach the quarter-finals at the Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Squash Open, only to be followed into the last eight by Joey Chan Ho-ling.

HK Open boost for Chan after Macau win

Joey Chan Ho-ling got a boost before this week's Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Open after winning her first title of the year at the Macau Open yesterday.

The No 2 seed completed a 11-8, 11-9, 11-5 victory over Aisling Blake of Ireland in the final of the US$16,000 tournament.

Chiu gives world number two a scare

Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin gave world number two Natalie Grinham of Australia a real fright before losing in the quarter-finals of the Kuala Lumpur Open last night. Hong Kong number one Chiu took one game off the former World and British Open finalist before she finally succumbed to Grinham, who is also the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, 9-7, 9-2, 7-9, 9-3.

Open draw a blow for Chiu

Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin was dismayed when she saw the draw for the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open yesterday. Hong Kong's top player was drawn against the one opponent she wanted to avoid in the early stages of the tournament.
