Long-serving trainer Wong Tang-ping was last night celebrating an opening-day double, with South African newcomer Douglas Whyte delighted to have partnered one of them.

Ping struck with Fireball (6-4 favourite) in the third event and wrapped up the first day's proceedings when Red Jeans (10-1) scored an upset win in the final event.

Excellent first-season handler Ricky Yiu could be back on the scoresheet again this Sunday at Sha Tin given the way that Cold Killer has shaped since joining his stable. Yiu, generally, has been in splendid form ever since Cosmolife opened his training account at the start of the season, but he peaked at the city track on Wednesday night when saddling his first treble.
