Woody Allen

Channel hop

There's a great line in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which Channel hop just happened to watch about five minutes ago. It comes from the author Gertrude Stein - or, at least, her character in the film.

Our world's become an existential joke

As a failed philosophy student, I can't help but notice how people don't use words like existence and existential in popular English-speaking culture the way they used to. DRESS UPS AND DOWNS

When Woody Allen said '80 per cent of life is turning up' he could have been talking about the dress-up outfits in the South Stand. Mere Anarchy

Mere Anarchy

by Woody Allen

Random House, HK$176

It hasn't been easy for Woody Allen fans of late. His labyrinthine personal life notwithstanding, Allen's recent films have bombed, exploding in a no-man's land between the mildly interesting and the faintly amusing.

Match point

Match Point is Woody Allen's best film in years. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays Chris, an Irish tennis instructor in London. He meets Tom Hewitt (Matthew Goode), the heir of a rich family. Tom's sister Chloe (Emily Mortimer) falls for Chris, who skyrockets to the top of the social ladder as a Hewitt family son-in-law.

Woody Allen films rarely come without inter-textuality, and in Match Point it arrives early.
