PLA to step up war preparedness as military exercises 'have become a show'

The People's Liberation Army must rid itself of deep-seated habits, cultivated within the military by decades of peace, in order to prepare for war at a moment's notice, the mouthpiece of the armed forces reported yesterday.

The youngest member of the Central Military Commission (CMC), 62-year-old PLA air force commander General Xu Qiliang , is a front runner to become one of the commission's two professional vice-chairmen next month.

Rising star in P.L.A. to head top college

A tech-savvy, 48-year-old rising star in the mainland military has been promoted to head a prominent college affiliated with the People's Liberation Army in the latest personnel reshuffle.

Major General Yang Xuejun was made president of the National University of Defence Technology in Changsha this week, staff at the university said.

Wen gets second term as NPC approves key appointments

The National People's Congress yesterday re-elected Wen Jiabao as premier for a second five-year term, and promoted two new men to become the country's top judge and procurator.

Mr Wen, 65, ranked third in the Communist Party hierarchy, received 2,926 votes for, 21 against and 12 abstentions.

Four promoted to senior PLA positions
