Licence to grill

Japanese restaurant Kushiyaki (below) opened on the first day of the Lunar New Year in Langham Place, Mongkok. The owner, Albert Cheung, also has a cha chan teng (tea cafe) in the neighbourhood. If you have some knowledge of Japanese culinary terms, you'll have guessed the restaurant specialises in meat, seafood and vegetables put on skewers and grilled (kushiyaki).

Waiters outnumbered customers on the night we visited this yakitori restaurant in Lan Kwai Fong. As we entered, the familiar sounds of Eugene Pao coming from the Jazz Club the floor above segued into Kenny G, Sumiya's main act for the night.

Traditional recipe worth sticking to

Robatayaki I Chi Ban

Causeway Bay is home to so many Japanese restaurants it may well be Hong Kong's Little Tokyo. But here, as elsewhere, standards vary. If you're looking for an intimate place to sip beer and scoff gingko nuts, however, Robatayaki I Chi Ban gets the nod.
