An extended visit to China by a former foreign minister of Japan has triggered a political row. The opposition is demanding Yoriko Kawaguchi be stripped of her position as chairwoman of the environment committee of the upper house of the Diet for showing disrespect to parliamentary rules.

At a press conference wrapping up China's diplomacy over last year, Yang Jiechi said tensions in the East China Sea had been triggered by Japan's "seizure" of the Diaoyu islands, called the Senkakus by Japan. He urged Tokyo to respect history and told Washington not to interfere in regional affairs.

Syrian envoy to meet China's foreign minister during four-day visit

Syrian deputy foreign minister Faisal Muqdad arrived in Beijing for a four-day visit yesterday, after Syria's opposition offered to hold talks with the Damascus government to end its long bloody conflict.

Muqdad will meet Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Deputy Foreign Minister and Zhai Jun during his trip, which will end on Thursday.
