Eight dead as tour bus plunges into valley

A Taiwan tour bus with at least 30 passengers aboard plunged into a valley in the scenic mountain resort of Yangmingshan in Taipei yesterday, killing eight passengers and injuring the others.

Chiang Kai-shek's former house gutted

A former residence of late Taiwanese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek burned down before dawn on the scenic Yangming Mountain yesterday amid an escalating campaign to wipe out Chiang's legacy.

The main hall of the 87-year-old Grass Mountain Villa on the outskirts of Taipei was destroyed by the fire.

Marital squeeze

From a distance it seemed a mystery: a triangular white object in the surf reflecting flashes of light in the sun. Then I saw others, fluttering like giant butterflies as the waves rose and broke over them. Minute figures scurried round them - engineers, perhaps, seeking to rescue some pieces of space technology that had parachuted down through the morning air?

Highs and lows

This year has seen unusually low temperatures for March in Taiwan, and for an unusually long period. Last weekend, snow again dusted the tops of Yangmingshan's volcanic hills, visible from Taipei's city centre, while in the central mountains, snowdrifts continued to drape the 4,000-metre peaks of Yu Shan and its lofty neighbours.
