The jasmine revolutions in the Arab world will not hamper China's efforts to improve relations with all Arab states and Islamic countries, according to the head of the regional government in Ningxia, an area with a large Muslim population.

Wumart buys stake in Ningxia retailer

Wumart Stores, Beijing's largest supermarket chain, has acquired a 27.7 per cent stake in retail operator Xinhua Co for 176.7 million yuan to expand into northwestern China.

Xinhua, listed on the Shanghai stock exchange in 1997, principally operates four department stores and 23 supermarkets in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia.

Hundreds are struck down with food poisoning

At least 348 people, including scores of children, have been admitted to hospital with food poisoning in four separate incidents.

In one case, more than 100 children were taken to the Yinchuan People's Hospital in Ningxia province after experiencing fever, diarrhoea and vomiting, a doctor from the hospital said yesterday.

SANDSTORMS START

The first sandstorm of the year hit Ningxia yesterday, Xinhua reported. Two aircraft flying to Yinchuan, Ningxia's capital, were forced to divert because of poor visibility. Sandstorms wreak havoc on the mainland every spring.

An unemployed man has emerged victorious from the nation's first lawsuit by an individual against a company for environmental pollution.

Zhang Diansheng, 43, won compensation both for his economic losses and mental anguish, and succeeded in closing the polluter. It was also the first case involving the detrimental effects of smoke dust.
