Matter of debate gets serious

The Nesta-SCMP Inter-school Debating Competition, which began in 2000, has become Hong Kong's largest debating competition.

The competition, jointly organised by the Native English Speaking Teachers' Association and the South China Morning Post, is sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

SLC set to book ticket to handball final

With seven Hong Kong youth team members in their lineup, the boys from Shek Lei Catholic Secondary School (SLC) will be hard to beat in tomorrow's semi-finals of the All-Hong Kong Schools (Jing Ying) Handball Tournament.

SLC, from Kwai Chung, has looked the best team so far, according to coaches.

Records galore at swimming gala

A sense of timing is important not only to competitors, but to organisers.

Ying Wa College's annual inter-house swimming gala was held earlier than usual this year despite bad weather and severe time constraints.

But thanks to the determination of staff and participants it went ahead as planned.

Sixth formers organise trip to mainland

This summer, sixth formers from the Interact Club of Ying Wa College and Ying Wa Girls' School organised an eight-day trip to Siuhing on the mainland.

The purpose of the trip was for students to experience farm life, promote cultural exchange and help needy children.

We planted trees and cleared weeds that hindered the growth of saplings.

Parents deserve care, respect

Enacting a law to force people to take care of their parents is not reasonable. I also doubt its effectiveness.

Which parents would send their children to jail for breaking such a law? Poor living conditions would not be able to turn a parent's love into hate. Children would never be sued and the law would be ineffective.

Exco member praises his old school

Education Commission chairman Antony Leung Kam-chung praised Ying Wa College for producing students whose talents had contributed to Hong Kong's prosperity.

Speaking at the school's speech day, Mr Leung said Ying Wa had a 180-year history and students should treasure its accomplishments.

MONDAY: I sorted out correspondence and informed colleagues about my Taiwan study trip last week. In the evening, there was a thanksgiving service and dinner reception at City Hall for prominent evangelist Luis Palau.
