Redundant employees protest over payout

Hundreds of redundant workers at a factory in Wuhan, Hubei, that made PLA uniforms before it went bankrupt thought that four years of waiting for their promised compensation was enough. So they took to the streets and blocked traffic on Monday.

One witness said yesterday that the protest had lasted for some 3 1/2 hours before ending that night.

Hong Kong to Macau in a mere 101/2 hours

Cheered on by a large crowd, a chubby 41-year-old mainland university lecturer yesterday became the first person to swim from Hong Kong to Macau. Zhang Jian achieved the feat in 101/2 hours.

Zhang, from Beijing Sport University, also became the first person to swim across Lingding Yang, the bay at the mouth of the Pearl River.

Channel hero faces fresh test in chilly volcano lake

Zhang Jian, the Beijing teacher who this week became the first Chinese swimmer to conquer the English Channel, will make another daring attempt next month - to swim Lake Tianchi in Jilin province.

Located in the majestic Changbeishan, in Jilin, Lake Tianchi is the deepest volcano lake in China.

Channel swimmer realises his dream

Less than a year after setting a world record by becoming the first swimmer to cross the Bohai Gulf, Beijing teacher Zhang Jian has become the first Chinese to swim the English Channel.

After starting from Shakespeare Beach, Dover, yesterday at 6.30am, he covered the 33.8km to the shores of Calais, France, in 12 hours, Xinhua reported.
