Jury is still out on Zhaoqing's 'wireless city'

Zhaoqing has long been known as Guangdong's garden city, but the local government has an ambitious plan to transform it into a wireless city.

Last month, Zhaoqing's city government signed a 2.3 billion yuan (HK$2.6 billion) contract with China Mobile to build a wireless Zhaoqing in the next five years.

Villagers battle police over land

Out and about

On the West River, 110km northwest of Guangzhou, Zhaoqing - better known to Cantonese speakers as Shiu Hing - is one of Guangdong province's most scenic towns. Records indicate the city existed as early as 220BC but the name Zhaoqing, which means 'start of auspiciousness', dates from 1118 and was bestowed upon the town by Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song dynasty.

Two arrested for killing six family members

Police have arrested two men suspected of murdering six members of a family, including four children, in Guangdong's Zhaoqing city on Saturday, local officials said.

The suspects, both surnamed Deng, were aged 21 and 22. One had been receiving financial aid to study from the victims' family for at least a year, police said yesterday.

Getting there: Direct buses and trains link Hong Kong and Zhaoqing, but in terms of time, price and customs convenience, the ferry is the most appealing option. A daily service leaves the China Hong Kong City Ferry Terminal in Kowloon at 8.15am. The journey takes less than four hours, and a seat in the air-conditioned first-class lounge costs $200.

SAR man scoops jackpot

For the first time a Hong Kong man has won the legalised soccer-betting jackpot in China. The man won 6.1 million yuan (HK$5.8 million) after placing 512 bets of two yuan each last weekend when he visited Zhaoqing, Guangdong. The man guessed correctly all the outcomes of the English Premier League and Italian Serie A games.
