Man stabbed to death in latest attack on foreigner

A man of foreign nationality was stabbed to death yesterday in Beijing amid a rising tide of anti-foreigner sentiment.

The attack occurred at the entrance of Qudeng alleyway in Xicheng district, south of Tiananmen Square, at around 3pm.

American stabbed to death at Beijing tourist spot

An American was stabbed to death yesterday in Beijing by an attacker described by police as having a history of psychological illness.

Howard Thomas Mills, 62, was stabbed at around 3.20pm in the Qudeng hutong, an alleyway close to the popular tourist area of Qianmen in the Xicheng district southwest of Tiananmen Square, Beijing police said.

Although security in Beijing is at an all-time high with the country's 60th anniversary less than a week away, three men wielding long knives went on a rampage, killing at least two and injuring more than a dozen. Onlookers eventually threw stones and wooden boards at them, managing to catch one of the attackers.

Soho China has acquired 54,691 square metres of commercial and retail property in Qianmen district in Beijing for 1.77 billion yuan (HK$2.01 billion), after failing to get government approval to acquire 134,333 sqmetres of land in the historic commercial district for 5.25 billion yuan.
