With eight centuries of history, Tan is the last urban village left in Guangzhou's Zhujiang New Town, a prime site filled with high-end office buildings. Like the 137 other urban villages in Guangzhou, old Tan is gradually being reduced to concrete rubble by the wreckers' ball.

Angry Guangzhou natives in the ramshackle village of Tan, the last urban village left standing in the posh Zhujiang New Town, have stepped up their fight in court this week to protect their ancient homes. Four families from Tan appeared before the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court on Wednesday, trying to get their eviction orders overturned. And more than 200 people showed up from Tan and other urban villages that are seeing forced evictions without what the residents consider fair compensation.

Evergrande, Trump eye Guangzhou tower

Guangzhou-based Evergrande Real Estate Group has teamed up with developer Donald Trump of the United States and a Hong Kong-based fund to bid on developing a landmark office tower in Guangzhou, sources said.

The consortium will vie for the development rights of the East Tower, one of the Guangzhou Twin Tower projects in the Zhujiang New Town financial centre.
