What is the East China Sea dispute about?

The sovereignty of a group of islands in the East China Sea has been a source of friction between Japan and China for decades. Known as the Senkakus in Japan and the Diaoyus in China, relations remain tense between the two countries, a year after the Japanese government nationalised the islands.
