The Pyongyang Film Festival was founded in 1987 and entries were initially limited to films from members of the Non-Aligned Movement. But since 2002, the biennial event has widened its reach and shown films from countries ranging from Britain and France to China and Australia.

This year’s festival formally opened on Friday – one week after North Korea carried out its fifth nuclear test, triggering global condemnation and threats of renewed UN sanctions.
