WHO promises strong defence against epidemics

The director general of the World Health Organisation, Dr Margaret Chan, told the Asia Society in Hong Kong on December 20 that new diseases were arriving as germs mutate. "New diseases are emerging at an alarming pace, old diseases are becoming permanently established in new places, and resistance to antibiotics is rendering many mainstay drugs useless, raising the spectre of a post-antibiotic era," she said.
