He has the liver spots, dewlap and grey-fringed bald spot of virtually all men of 82, but Shigeo Tokuda is unique among his Japanese contemporaries.

While they are often content with the occasional round of golf with their cronies, genteel hikes in the mountains or lavishing gifts on their grandchildren, Tokuda is still hard at work. It is a source of great pride that his stamina, know-how and work ethic are still in demand in a country that was built on the labour and sacrifices of the post-war generation.

In conversation with Japan’s 82-year-old porn star

He also believes that his present employment is of benefit to many other men in a society that is ageing rapidly.

Tokuda, who uses a stage name for his appearances, is a star of Japan’s insatiable pornographic movie industry.

His speciality, unsurprisingly, is in the sector aimed squarely at elderly viewers – Japan’s booming “silver economy” – and Tokuda is listed by the Guinness World Records as the oldest working male porn star in the world.

“I have appeared in about 400 titles in the more than 20 years since my first movie, but I have been slowing down recently because I am getting a bit older,” Tokuda told This Week in Asia.

Can porn be feminist? These woman directors say yes, if it’s honest, respectful and authentic

The “Silver Porn” sector may have been around when he started out – Tokuda recalls a sempai, the respectful term for a senior, who was still “active” when he was 90 but has since died – but it has certainly grown in recent years.

And while Tokuda’s chosen vocation may seem unusual to some, his story of working well into his senior years is becoming more and more common as Japan’s demographics continue to mature.

“The number of elderly people in Japanese society is increasing, so that is one reason why this sector of the adult movie industry is growing,” Tokuda said, adding that retirees have time on their hands, still in good health and have cash in the bank since their children are grown. All these factors permit them to devote more energy to their hobbies.

As of the last Respect for the Aged Day, a national holiday celebrated every September, a record 34.6 million Japanese were 65 or older, accounting for 27.3 per cent of the total population.

Those statistics bode ill for the future of the nation. With fewer babies being born, the Japanese population is expected to fall from 126 million to below 100 million by 2053, meaning there will be fewer taxpaying workers to support a growing number of retirees.

Still, old folk today are nevertheless enjoying their dotage.

“Half-a-century ago, anyone who reached the age of 60 was very old by Japanese standards, but now reaching your 70s and 80s here really is nothing special,” said Makoto Watanabe, an associate professor of communications and media at Hokkaido Bunkyo University.

“The concept of ageing in Japanese society has become quite different within the space of a generation and instead of effectively being the end of a person’s life, turning 60 today is just seen as a turning point and a chance to transition into a new life.

How porn has been secretly behind the rise of the internet and other technologies

“These people worked through the years of Japan’s bubble economy and many of them are very wealthy, so they have become a very powerful market that is doing a lot to help drive the economy,” he added.

However, even those with healthy bank balances and hobbies continue to work because they genuinely enjoy their careers. Others have trouble adapting to a life without a job, while another group stay on because younger workers do not have their skills or know-how.

It is not clear which category Tokuda falls into; given that some of the sex videos he has made fall into the “instructional” category, it is possible that it is a combination of all three.

“When I was young, people did not talk about sex because it was socially unacceptable and embarrassing, but I feel now that there is a sense of rebelliousness amongst my generation and we want to go against that.

“Perhaps that is another reason why more older people are attracted to ‘silver porn’,” he said.
