Heavy showers and thunderstorms hit Hong Kong on Sunday evening and have continued into Monday.

The Observatory issued a thunderstorm alert at 6.40pm on Sunday, which stayed in force until 12.30am.

“Under the influence of a trough of low pressure, there are thundery showers over Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea,” the service said.

“Besides, an easterly airstream is affecting the coast of Guangdong.”

The Observatory warned “showers will be heavy at times with squally thunderstorms over the region” on Monday night.

The weather service also predicted 10 straight days of rain from Sunday, with showers continuing on Tuesday, before easing off a little over the next couple of days.
