Ring Fit Adventure is finally arriving on the Nintendo Switch in China 10 months after its initial release elsewhere.

The exercise game became a breakout hit during the Covid-19 pandemic in China. Even though the coronavirus is now largely under control in the country, Tencent is still betting on the popularity of Ring Fit Adventure with an official release.

In a brief live-streamed event on Wednesday night, Tencent announced that Ring Fit Adventure would be available for the Switch in China starting September 3 for 499 yuan (US$72). Pre-orders for the game started on Thursday at midnight exclusively on JD.com, the e-commerce platform backed by Tencent, which is also Nintendo’s official partner in China.

Next month, the game will also be available from electronics store Suning and Alibaba’s Tmall. Buyers get a Ring-Con controller with a leg strap and a download code to redeem the game on the Nintendo eShop.

On social media, many people expressed interest in the official version of the game. Previously, gamers in China had to get physical grey-market copies imported from abroad unless they had an international Switch with access to the Nintendo eShop in another region.

Right Fit Adventure was originally released last October, but this year’s pandemic made it one of the go-to games on the Switch as people looked for ways to stay active while also staying indoors. The increase in popularity sent prices soaring.

While the original retail price of the game was US$79.99, scalpers have been selling the game on Chinese e-commerce sites for more than 700 yuan (US$100). At the height of its popularity, prices surged to over 2,000 yuan (US$289), with counterfeit Ring-Cons becoming a hot commodity and selling out at one point.
Like other Switch games in China, Ring Fit Adventure is selling for a slightly lower price in the country. But Tencent says it will only work on the Chinese version of the console. A lot of gamers had already bought overseas models online before the Switch officially launched in China last December.
Many people shunned the official Chinese model at first because it offered so few games. Thanks to China’s stringent game approval process, the Switch only had three games officially available in China until May – all of them from the Mario franchise. With no other games on the eShop, Switch owners had to buy game cards from overseas to play other games.
The addition of a game as popular as Ring Fit Adventure could make the Chinese Switch more appealing. Gaming market research firm Niko Partners predicts the game’s affordable price and high demand will boost Switch sales in China.
