Four Chinese video apps were recognized by Apple this year, and TikTok isn’t one of them. Apple’s Best of 2019 list for iPhone apps includes short video platform Kuaishou, Meitu’s new short video editing app WIDE and two apps from VUE.
Kuaishou is China’s second most popular short video app after Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. Aside from goofy, Jackass-like stunts, it’s also famous for its farmer streaming celebrities documenting their lives in rural China.
WIDE is a relatively new app from Meitu, known for its selfie editing apps. The company’s CEO Wu Xinhong told local media on Monday that the editing tools are mostly used by Douyin and Kuaishou users. VUE was mentioned for its vlogging and video editing apps.
It’s not surprising that video apps from China are getting a strong boost. Live streaming is a huge industry in the country, where more than 75% of internet users are now using Kuaishou or Douyin.
Another app recognized by Apple is Sky: Children of Light, which won the the iPhone Game of the Year category. The game was made by Netease-backed thatgamecompany, which was co-founded by Chinese developer Jenova Chen.
