This article originally appeared on ABACUS How many cameras does a smartphone need? It looks like Huawei thinks the answer is three. Its upcoming premium flagship, the P20 Pro -- not to be confused with its sibling, the P20 -- will feature a three-camera system on the phone’s rear. And that’s in addition to a front-facing selfie camera. WinFuture reports the three cameras will include: - a 40-megapixel color camera - a 20-megapixel black-and-white camera - an 8-megapixel telephoto camera So why do phones need multiple cameras? Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro uses a regular camera alongside a monochrome one . The black-and-white camera detects how much light is being let in, allowing it to consistently shoot great shots in low-light conditions. The iPhone X’s second camera has a telephoto lens for optical zoom and for depth of field in portrait mode photos. It looks like the P20 Pro could be the best of both worlds, allowing for better shots in low-light situations plus optical zoom. The P20 Pro is set to be unveiled in Paris on March 27.
