China’s holiday revelers have been given an unusual visual treat lately.

Hundreds of illuminated drones have been putting up dazzling light shows during Chinese festivals, forming words and giant images in the night sky.

The results are impressive for sure, but they don’t come cheap: One city government paid a whopping 10.5 million yuan (about US$1.5 million) for a record-breaking show that featured more than 1,300 drones over the ancient city of Xi’an.
