Highland Dragon was only having his second start, but showed he is here for business with an impressive display at Sha Tin on Sunday. The Sean Woods-trained new recruit caught the eye in both his trials down the straight course behind some smart types, but weakened in his first appearance at the races on April 9 after travelling up on the speed. He certainly came on for that run and showed further progress in the mornings, but was given a tough task from a bad gate this time in the Class Three Dingolfing Handicap (1,200m). The three-year-old jumped awkwardly and was taken back by Andreas Suborics, rounded the final bend five wide behind a wall of horses created by Nightlign, Gene Power and Sunny Fay, pulled into the clear outside of Sunny Fay at the 200m and was clocking a final split of 22.82 seconds to come home a 1 3/4-length sixth behind winner Keen Marie - a length off short-priced favourite Simple for third. Highland Dragon found his way into Hong Kong off a mark of 66 for three starts in New Zealand as Daichi Dancer. As a two-year-old, he made no impression in his debut over 880m at Pukekohe, before being thrown in to the deep end when 10th in the Group Three Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie. Returning near 10 months later in his three-year-old season, he disputed for the lead before dashing clear to prevail as the favourite over 1,150m at Te Awamutu. He is a brown gelding by Fusaichi Pegasus and Orphen mare Rogan's Gem. Fusaichi Pegasus was among the best of his generation when winning the 2000 Kentucky Derby and has had a steady stream of runners present in Hong Kong with 21 winners from 35 starters, including the once 123-rated Floral Pegasus and the boom youngster Wah May Star. Highland Dragon is the first foal of his dam Rogan's Gem, who was a six-time winner at 1,000m and 1,100m and is a half-sister to eight winners, including Able Prince - a former stalwart sprinter in the John Moore yard - and Group winners Hurricane Queen, Bint Maher and Royal Fix. Analysing his pedigree, he has the potential to be a useful player up to 1,400m and has got a strong American influence on both sides of his pedigree to excel on the all-weather surface. Furthermore with the blood of Danzig and Halo on both sides, he will enjoy a track with a cushion as well.
