THE Hong Kong Arts Centre and the Asian Victims for a Hazard Free Environment, a local concern group, will jointly present several documentaries relating to industrial disasters in Asia this month.
The objective is to alert the public to the disastrous effects of the rapid industrialisation of Asia. The films will be screened on Monday and Tuesday at the Lim Por Yen Theatre of the Arts Centre.
Programme One on Monday at 7.30 pm features two documentaries from the Philippines/US and Japan. Toxic Sunset is a video documentary probing the issue of toxic waste of US military bases in the Philippines.
Minamata Disease traces back the tragedy caused by the Chisso Corporation as it started dumping inorganic mercury into the inland sea of Japan.
Programme Two on Tuesday at 7.30 pm features two documentaries from India. Bhopal - A Licence to Kill examines the issues raised by disastrous gas leakage from the Union Carbide plant in 1984.
Living in Fear explores the problem of nuclear leakage as a major world concern threatening every one of us.
