Karson Choi's Unique venture off to a flashy, if somewhat nervous, start
Karson Choi Ka-tsan, the chairman of Halewinner Watches Group, should be no stranger to special occasions. But at the opening of his Unique Timepieces flagship store in Causeway Bay on Wednesday, the son of 'King of Toys' Francis Choi Chee-ming looked a bit nervous giving his welcoming speech.
He didn't have to be, as his whole family - and model girlfriend Wang Yuen-yuen - were there for support.
Covering an area of 3,500 square feet, the store in Percival Street cost HK$10 million to furnish and took six months to kit out. It is divided into five 'VIP areas' dedicated to featured brands, namely Audemars Piguet, Omega, Roger Dubuis, Jaeger-LeCoultre and IWC. The idea, as the shop's name suggests, was to 'offer a place for customers to find the unique timepiece that suits their style', Choi said.
Representatives from all five brands attended the event, each arriving in a Lamborghini, and contributed to the opening ceremony by placing gear parts on the backdrop to symbolise a watch's movement. Afterwards, five models gave a catwalk show, before the event wrapped up with a toast. Choi then gave guests a tour of the shop.
The event also marked the start of the HK$100 Million Watch Exhibition, which runs until Sunday and showcases iconic watches from the five brands, including Jaeger-LeCoultre's one-of-a-kind Gyrotourbillon 1. The first 200 visitors will get champagne.
Anyone buying a watch at the shop before May 20 will be offered a ride in a Lamborghini. If you can afford to buy a watch at this shop, however, you probably already own a flash car.
