Yamashin cherry blossom-flavoured white bean paste makes a pleasant change from the regular sweet bean pastes used in Japanese cuisine. Made of white beans, sugar and salted sakura leaves, the paste is rich, sweet, soft and slightly salty, and would be a delicious substitute as a filling for mochi or taiyaki. The paste costs HK$42 for 250 grams at City'super, Times Square, Causeway Bay, tel: 2506 2888.

They are also good when chopped and used as a flavouring for stir-fried greens. The product, made in Taiwan of dried fish, chilli oil, sugar and salt, sells for HK$28 for 245 grams at City'super.
