80pc mortgage offer for discount flats
MORTGAGES of up to 80 per cent will be available for buyers of the first sandwich-class flats which go on sale today.
But a critic said the flats would still be out of reach of many.
The Housing Society announced yesterday the eight banks which took part in the current loan scheme had agreed in principle to lend up to 80 per cent.
Ambrose Lam Shui-kong, the society's director of finance and administration said: 'The banks are willing because the risk to them will be the same as the normal 70 per cent mortgage.
'This is because the Housing Society is providing a guarantee on the excess of mortgages over 70 per cent,' he said.
The 1,024 Tivoli Garden flats on Tsing Yi Island cost between $1.18 million and $2.2 million. They are sold at a 33 per cent discount to market value. Applications are open from today, ending on January 6.
