Filmmaker Cheang in top gear for Cannes

Filmmaker Cheang Pou-soi showed his latest creation at the Cannes International Film Festival last week. Motorway, produced by Johnnie To Kei-fung, stars Anthony Wong Chau-sang, Shawn Yue Man-lok and Barbie Hsu Hsi-yuan.

The much anticipated action flick, about an undercover police squad and featuring adrenaline-pumping car chases choreographed by Chin Kar-lok, was well received by buyers and critics.

Cheang said this week he wanted to convey the 'drive your life' message in the film. 'We have to experience the journey in order to know how we grow out of it,' he said. 'The film's not just about driving skills or how fancy the cars are, but how the characters conquer their flaws and become winners in life.'

The modest director said he was surprised at the warm response he received in Cannes. 'I hope Motorway will become a classic car-racing movie, winning over audiences and loved by critics,' he said. The film opens in Hong Kong on June 21.
