Unsure what to expect from a Brazilian jiu-jitsu class, I came away from a visit to Epic MMA (mixed martial arts) Club with my seven-year-old son surprised and enthused. The vast 15,000 sq ft club, expertly equipped, made a good first impression. But as I scanned the boxing ring and cage fighting area, I questioned if this really was a place for children. I soon found that the open and friendly staff were perfectly placed in transmitting their passion for the martial arts they taught.
My son sheepishly joined in a class with other five- to eight-year-old boys and girls and was soon really enjoying the exercises and learning grappling holds with the dummy. Credit has to be given to the teachers, who train children and adults and sustain their own high-calibre performance. The children clearly enjoy training alongside these accomplished athletes. Besides their skills, they have a presence and charisma that the youngsters responded to.
Anyone with experience in martial arts will recognise that the training, while essentially associated with fighting, is more about health and confidence. My son left the class elated that he had had a good workout. He was also bolstered by the sense of fraternity running through the gym.
Epic opened in March, and its ethos is one of community. Children, adults, or family memberships are offered. There is an inclusive and egalitarian character in the gym. During our lesson, the teachers were prompt in offering encouragement and praising effort, not just results.
Epic's club atmosphere is also a key characteristic. A juice bar and hang-out area occupies the centre space from which members and staff can relax and watch training and lessons. There are also iMacs all round the gym so you can also catch up on e-mails and news while you wind down or wait for your class. Joining Epic requires a one-off fee and then a monthly subscription depending on your package. Children's classes, which cost HK$1,250 per month, let them pick up classes whenever they wish. Two basic age divisions are available: five to eight and nine to 14. The club accommodates the needs of couples as well as families.
Verdict: neatly summed up by the vigour with which my son asked: 'Dad, can we sign up? Pleeease?'
