Lawmakers report on Yuen Long's illegal park

The Legislative Council's public accounts committee, chaired by lawmaker Philip Wong Yu-hong (pictured), releases a report on the unlawful 18-year occupation of a country park in Yuen Long by a commercial recreational park run by prominent Heung Yee Kuk member Leung Fuk-yuen. The case was revealed by a Director of Audit's report in April. The committee will discuss the case and make recommendations to the government.

Legco debate calls for Cepa upgrade

Lawmakers will debate a motion calling on the government to step up the implementation of Cepa, the free-trade deal which Hong Kong negotiated with the central government in a bid to encourage economic growth in the aftermath of the 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome. The motion, proposed by Samson Tam Wai-ho, notes that 'quite a number of small and medium-sized enterprises' had complained that progress on co-operation had failed to progress beyond the policy stage.

Cuba's president visits Beijing, Hanoi

Cuban President Raul Castro (pictured) arrives in Beijing for a four-day visit to China. The Foreign Ministry says Castro will meet President Hu Jintao and sign co-operation documents. Castro, who took over from his older brother, Fidel, in 2008, will also visit Vietnam during his Asia tour and experts say Havana is seeking guidance from its allies on how to navigate the transition of its socialist economy toward a system incorporating elements of capitalism.
