EDMUND, 18, has been a cough mixture abuser for more than five years. He has made two serious attempts to quit but failed. Although he no longer considers himself a drug addict he still needs two bottles a week to keep him going. Despite this dependency, Edmund thinks he is in control of the situation. He claims he can stop when he wants to and says the habit has no serious impact on his health. But when asked to advise today's youngsters, he said: 'Of course I would not recommend it. My parents are heartbroken. 'One time I mixed the cough medicine with some other drugs. I could not remember what happened, but my friends told me I had fits, which came and went, lasting about three hours. They told me I was all over the place.' Ah Mui, 17, had been abusing various types of drugs, including heroin and cough mixture, for two years before she decided to quit three months ago. Ah Mui said a typical drug-taking session was one she enjoyed with friends. 'It was just like a party. I took 60 pills, mixing them with three bottles of cough mixture. I could not remember exactly what happened afterwards. 'All I know was I was completely incoherent. The police were called, then I fell asleep. When I woke up, I found my wallet missing.'
