SHANGHAI and Shenzhen stock markets had 288 listed companies at mid-December, up from 183 at the end of last year, says China Securities.

The paper said 17 state enterprises were listed on markets in Hong Kong and New York by then.
Developing quickly after listing, 50 firms were now ranked among the 500 largest enterprises in China, up 60 per cent from 1993's figure. In mid-1994, sales of Shanghai-listed companies had multiplied 3.5 times and after-tax profit eight times from a year-earlier, the paper said.
